In-person, program space behind the adult new book area.
Registration required.
Use our online event calendar to register.
For reluctant and emerging readers.
-
Read to Dogs is held in cooperation with Therapy Dogs of Tenafly. Children read one-on-one to a dog/trainer team for a 20 minute session.
-
This program typically runs every week through the school year with a break during the summer months.
Why Read to a Dog?
Learning to read is often less about intellectual limitation than about overcoming fears. Animals are ideal reading companions because they:
-
Help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure.
-
Listen attentively.
-
Do not laugh, judge, or criticize.
-
Allow children to proceed at their own pace.
-
Are less intimidating than peers.

New and emerging readers read one-on-one with a teen volunteer from Tenafly Middle School or Tenafly High School.
-
Teen volunteers can read to children not quite ready to read on their own.
-
Children are encouraged to bring their own books or they can select one from our collection.
Reading with a teen buddy helps new and emerging readers gain confidence and independence while practicing reading skills.
