Read to Dogs

Use our online event calendar to register. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

For reluctant and emerging readers.

  • Read to Dogs is held in cooperation with Therapy Dogs of Tenafly. Children read one-on-one to a dog/trainer team for a 20 minute session.

  • This program typically runs every week through the school year with a break during the summer months.

Why Read to a Dog?

Learning to read is often less about intellectual limitation than about overcoming fears. Animals are ideal reading companions because they:

  • Help increase relaxation and lower blood pressure.

  • Listen attentively.

  • Do not laugh, judge, or criticize.

  • Allow children to proceed at their own pace.

  • Are less intimidating than peers.

Reading Buddies, Thursdays 4 - 5 pm, ages 5 years & up

Use our online event calendar to register. REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

  • New and emerging readers read one-on-one with a teen volunteer from Tenafly Middle School or Tenafly High School.

  • Teen volunteers can read to children not quite ready to read on their own.

  • Children are encouraged to bring their own books or they can select one from our collection.

Reading with a teen buddy helps new and emerging readers gain confidence and independence while practicing reading skills.
