Summer Reading 2021

Track your reading by computer from tenaflylibrary.readsquared.com or download the READsquared app (for iPhone or Android) from your app store

 

Earn points for reading books, writing reviews, attending programs and completing at home missions. Win raffle tickets for great prizes (on display in the library)

Summer Reading begins June 18

All participants keep track of books read at tenaflylibrary.readsquared.com (or use the app). Adult participants can use a paper form.  Click here to download adult paper form or pick up a copy at the library.

  • 1 book = 1 bead for necklace (preK - grade 8)

  • 1 book = 100 points toward a raffle ticket (1 picture book = 50 points)

  • 1 mission = 100 points

  • 1 approved book review = 100 points

  • 500 points = 1 raffle ticket

  • 1 extra raffle ticket for each additional 300 points. Maximum 1 prize per participant.

 

At registration, children receive a necklace and take home bead tracker.  Readers earn colored beads by reading different book genres. Return to library with bead tracker (outdoor bead station) to claim beads and get a new bead tracker.

 

Bead pick up: Mon. to Fri. 3:30 - 5 pm & Sat. 11 am - 1 pm

 

Important dates:

  • Friday, August 13 last day to record reading, write reviews or complete missions 

  • Saturday, August 14 last day to pick up beads and enter raffle drawing.

  • Monday, August 16 date of drawing 

  • Monday, August 23 last day to pick up prizes

Letters Against Isolation

Send a note to an isolated senior to brighten their day. Pick up a post card kit at the library. 

 

Bring completed postcard to the library and we'll mail it to a senior in need.

Stories in the Park 

@ Davis Johnson Park, all ages

Monday, 6:00 pm, 6/21 – 8/9

Registration is NOT required.

Join Miss Tish for stories and songs at Davis Johnson Park on the patio by the Engle Street parking area. Bring a blanket and a picnic dinner to enjoy while you listen.  Some stories will be short and simple for younger children, but we'll also include longer more exciting stories for elementary aged children.

Reading Buddies, ages 4+

Monday & Wednesday, 6/22-8/11, 

15 minute appointments between 3:30  & 4:30pm 

Emerging or reluctant readers read one-on-one with teen volunteers. Bring your own book or choose from one of ours.  Click here for our online event calendar. Pick the day and time to register your child.

Comic Book Workshop, ages 7 - 10

Monday, 11am 7/12, 7/19, 7/26, 8/2

(register once to attend all 4 classes)

Create your own comic book character.  Participants plan, create, edit and collaborate on a short comic book project with a unique character.  No previous drawing/sketching experience required.​ Click here to register for the entire series.

Toddler Tales, ages 2 to 5 yrs

Tuesday, 11 am 

We'll share books, storytelling, songs, and games as well as crafty projects during this outdoor storytime. Activities are designed to foster speech development, perfect gross and fine motor skills, and, the most important thing, create a space for fun together! 

 

Show & Tell, ages 5 - 8

Tuesday, 3:30 pm

Children bring one item (or an entire collection) to the library and share it with peers and teen volunteers.  In a pressure-free environment, children gain experience with public speaking, an important communication skill many fear, while they learn from others their age.

Baby Time, ages birth to 2 yrs

Thursday, 11 am

We'll share books, songs, and games designed to expose children to a large vocabulary as well as much needed social interaction.  We will NOT share toys but each baby (or family) will have their own space and families are welcome to bring their own toys.

Crafty Workshop, ages 6 - 10

Thursday, 3:30 pm

Make puppets to tell tales and a tail or two to dress up your summer look.  Come dressed for the weather AND for getting messy.

Join us for the noisiest playtime at the library.  Dance on our floor piano, beat on drums, shake those bells, and rattle some maracas.

Play with sand, bubbles, duckies, and more.  If you have a little one who is ready to explore the world with lots of hands on sensory-rich play, join us for some outdoor fun this summer. 

 

Kids COOKIN’ ages 8 - 10

Friday, 3:30 pm

Before each meeting, participants are encouraged to check out and try a recipe from a pre-selected cookbook available at the library.  Meet to discuss the book and then make a no-bake treat.

What's On Children

  • Most teen programs held online via Zoom. Registration required for all teen programs.

  • DIY Crafting: pick up kit and make project while meeting online with facilitator and other participants. Teen Take and Make Summer: pick up kit and make project at home at any time convenient to you.

The Stock Market Game

Tuesdays, 2:00 - 2:30 pm, 7/5 - 8/10

This program meets on Zoom.  Register once for the entire series.  Participants will receive Zoom links prior to the start of the program. 

Curious about the Stock Market?  The Stock Market Game introduces young people to saving and investing through a simulation of the stock market and the bond market.  Teams compete through managing their own $100,000 portfolio. Click here to register for the entire series.

DIY Natural Grooming Projects

Wednesday, 2 pm

Have you ever wanted to make your own natural grooming product?  This is a gender neutral program that will provide a short history of DIY and explain the benefits of natural vs. commercial products.  All kits will include the natural ingredients and container needed for the DIY lip balm.

 

This class will be presented online by Madison, a college student who started her own company to share her passion for DIY projects.

Teens  Cook with FlavorLabs  

Friday, 5 pm, on Zoom

Ready to step up your cooking game?  Learn some culinary skills that will impress your family and friends.  With each class with Flavor Labs, teens will learn essential culinary skills such as chopping, cutting, blending and cooking on a stovetop.  We will make a new dish each class - savory such as mac & cheese and sweet such as banana pudding.
